| Semester 1 | The painting experience begins with water-base media with a
review of the concepts learned earlier pertaining to the mixing and
understanding of color theory. Additional activities are required that develop
skills in surface preparation, usage and care of tools, and preparation and
presentation of finished works. The students are directed to create their own
work, using skills in drawing shown earlier in the Design studio, and complete
the projects offered. The students are required to complete 3 works during the
semester that progressively develop skills from the basic application of paint
to the finished watercolor painting. (Report: Proto-Renaissance) Lesson Plans:Color Chart/ Still-life/ Illustration |
| Semester 2 | This semester allows for the completion of the water-base experience and begins the transition to the acrylic section of the course of study. The students are introduced to the new media by comparison to watercolors showing differences and advantages of care and application of this water-based medium. The students are required to complete 2 works in the acrylic medium during this term. The projects are designed for the progressive development of student skill in the acrylic media. | Semester 3 | This semester begins with the introduction of the final project in acrylics, the hard-edge technique. Procedures and techniques are shown and creative sketches are reviewed before the project is started. This project begins the transition to oils in that it is completed on stretched canvas. Half way through the semester, the introduction to the oil-based medium begins. Comparisons to processes, tools, and paint quality are emphasized. Skill development is demonstrated by an activity that includes variations of application of oil paint. ( Report:16th Century Italian Art) |
| Semester 4 | The painting studio concludes with the final semester dealing with the completion of the oil painting requirement. Throughout the year, the students are given a broad understanding of compositional skills, lighting concerns, and style development that are all considered in the students sketches leading to the solution to this painting. Special attention is given to the students application of color, using linseed oil and turpentine, to insure the proper usage of the medium in the completion of their paintings. Framing is also an element in this last semester and both the acrylic Hard-edge and the oil painting finish must be framed before grading. In the final review, the students are required to display their 3 best paintings of the year for a portfolio grade. (Report: Baroque Art) |
