| The work in this chapter
represents the artwork that was created outside of Italy
to the North during the same time period. Still immersed in the Gothic style, the architecture of the area stayed the
same well into the 16th century. However, the areas of
painting and sculpture, new artistic forces were gaining popularity.
This trend led to a more realistic style that eventually took on directions of
